A guide for creating your own public health photographs
The Public Health Visual Commons is built by people in the field, a shared library of images that reflect what public health really looks like. We need our collective efforts to grow this library, to continue to diversify images, better represent public health, and help people understand the nature of our work.
One of the best ways to help build the Commons is by adding images from your own work. We hope that as you create images of your own, you might also contribute to our shared library. Every image you create with your team and the communities you serve can support the broader public health field.

Images are reviewed before addition to the Visual Commons and our team at Health Resources in Action will have a conversation with prospective submitters to better understand their images, willingness to submit them to the Visual Commons, and, if necessary, provide capacity building around image creation.
While the Commons attempts to address challenges with current stock photography libraries by creating a more representative visual library, we also intend to build capacity and lower the barrier for organizations to make images of their own work and communities.
Later this year our team will release a Photography Guide to build capacity and help organizations create their own images. It will offer techniques, tips, framing, and more to help you direct or create your own images. The Photography Guide will support your organization’s image-making from planning to producing.
